After 43 years as a medical librarian and eight years at Harvard, Elaine R. Martin, DA, has retired, effective Friday, January 10. Dr. Martin joined Countway Library in 2016 as Director and Chief Administrative Officer. For over eight years, she provided leadership in strategic planning, development and the promotion of library resources and services, leading the library with profound passion and foresight. She imagined a more modern, vibrant, and inclusive library with renewed purpose and space, and she helped bring that vision to life. Following a multiphase renovation from 2019 to 2023, Countway has transformed into the flagship medical library of the 21st century and a hub for the Harvard Longwood Campus community.
Prior to Countway, Elaine served as Director of the Lamar Soutter Library at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester for 18 years. She also served as the Director of Library Services of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, New England Region, for more than 15 years.
Elaine will continue her work at the medical school through her participation in the "Research Data Management Librarian Academy" (RDMLA) and "Data Services Continuing Professional Education" (DSCPE). She will serve as Project Manager for these online training opportunities.
Len Levin, MS LIS, MA, Deputy Director of Countway, is now serving as Interim Library Director until a national search is completed. Len has worked as a health sciences librarian for 29 years, first at the New England Baptist Hospital on Mission Hill, then in various roles at the University of Massachusetts Medical School and, since 2017, at Countway Library, focusing on research and instruction, collections management, and library administration and finance.
