S. Jean Emans, M.D., is Mary Ellen Avery Professor of Pediatrics, Emerita at Harvard Medical School (HMS) and Chief Emeritus of the Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine at Boston Children’s Hospital. Specializing in pediatric and adolescent gynecology and reproductive health, Emans co-founded Children’s program in Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology in 1974. Emans also co-founded the Center for Young Women’s Health (CYWH), a program of Boston Children’s Hospital in 1998. The Center for Young Women's Health website was developed as a resource for teens to understand their own health. CYWH continues to provide carefully-researched health information on their site and on social media.

In addition to her work in adolescent health, Emans also advocated for faculty career development, especially for women in medicine. She was a member of HMS’ Joint Committee on the Status of Women (JCSW) and Boston Children’s Hospital Representative to the Dean’s Committee on Women and Careers. Emans was involved in the creation of Children’s Office of Faculty Development and became its director in 2000. Under her leadership, the Office of Faculty Development held mentoring programs and career development workshops, as well as conducting surveys on the status of women’s careers at HMS and at Children’s.
