One of the benefits of having a newly renovated Lower Level 1 is that it may serve as an event space to host professional events and activities related to our work.
On Saturday, October 21, Countway was delighted to host the Greater Boston Physicians for Social Responsibility’s (GBPSR) Global Health and Peace Awards honoring Senators Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey for the extraordinary work they have done as longtime leaders for climate action and nuclear disarmament and the recipients of the annual Youth Climate Leadership and Youth Nuclear Abolition awards. Scott Podolsky welcomed members on behalf of the Countway and Heather Mumford curated a small event exhibit that offered attendees a glimpse of the rich archival holdings stewarded by the Center related to International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) and Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR), including the records of the IPPNW and individual PSR and IPPNW-affiliated or closely connected members like Eric Chivian, Lachlan Forrow, Sanford Gifford, Howard Hiatt, Alexander Leaf, Jennifer Leaning, Bernard Lown, Jim Muller, and Victor Sidel.
The GBPSR is a physician-led group of health professionals and community members working to address two existential threats to human health: nuclear war and climate change. It is the founding chapter of the national group Physicians for Social Responsibility and part of PSR’s international federation, the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War. You can learn more on GBPSR's website.
Please enjoy some photos from the event below! Saturday’s event was an example of how Countway is a community connector, connecting people with our collections. In this particular situation, The Center was highlighted, the new classrooms, years of renovation projects, the VisWall, etc. Overall, it was an extremely successful event. If you would like to host a similar professional event related to your work, please contact Luciana.
